If you are planning a trip to France.

As from 4th January 2012 all Sat-navs in use in France must NOT have camera-location software installed.
Both Garmin and Tom Tom have issued an upgrade that removes the POi and replaces it with a "Danger-Zone" POi.

Crazy, I know but be advised that if you are coming to France these rules are in now in force.

The Police (in France) are not allowed to investigate your unit GPS/Phone etc but the Customs & Excise (Dounes) are and its reported that checks when leaving the ferries are likely.
1500 euro fines and confiscation of the units (ouch) for failure to comply.

You are 100% correct for France - but I have a feeling I read somewhere that this now the case in several other countries too - Belgium for one, I think.

More research and info from members around Europe, please.

My Garmin has the latest upgrade of both software and maps (I downloaded them last week) so I should be OK - at the moment.

I've noticed a few items in the BBC news this weekend about the need to upgrade your sat-nav - but they only mentioned new road layouts and the need for dedicated software for HGVs.

Singvogel. :)

Just spoke to my ex-pat nephew who lives in Bordeaux.

Hows this for some word-play fun:

It's now illegal in France to have on-board technology with info on radar sites, speed-cameras etc. but -

The police can only site them in areas where there is a history of accidents, deaths, etc. which are designated as danger zones!

In the interest of public safety - you are perfectly entitled to have 'stored' info on designated 'danger zones'.

An excellent solution if I may say so. :D :D

Travellers be aware - thanks for the heads-up Bugsy.

I am interested in updating my Garmin but cannot find any update available to me on their 'My Garmin' site. Where did you find this update, please?:)
