One year on, and i still have this front brake problem..

Drive and slow down to walking pace.. and as i apply the brake, theres like
a grinding or grumbling noise from the front brakes?
I could'nt sus it out.. so i went to my local LR garage and got them to have
a look.. they had a drive in it, and suggested it might be the ABS modulator playing up?

So, i replaced the ABS modulator, and re-bled the brakes... and its still
exactly the same??:mad:

I have checked the reluctor rings, as 'Chaser' suggested, there ok!
I have no warning lights come on! (ive tested them, they do work)
Its fitted with new disks, calipers & pads..

I disconnected the front wheel sensors, and went for a drive, and found
the noise had stopped?
Does this mean it does have something to do with TC/ABS ??:confused: or am i
barking up the wrong tree!!

Replying from a general automotive/mechanical engineering point of view rather than LR-specific...

First of all, why is this a problem? How often do you encounter it in normal driving? It sounds as though you have to create a special situation: "slow down to walking pace.. and apply the brake" to get it to happen! So just don't do that, then (I rarely do), and your problem will go away!

Moving on, most brake roughness problems arise from lack of cleaning. Disc brakes need to have corrosion cleaned from the pads and discs to work smoothly. This requires active input, unless you do regular rush-hour motorway driving, that gives the brakes a really good work-out. What you need to do is to drive quite quickly (say, 60+ mph) along a straight, dry road with no other traffic, and brake hard - as close to triggering the ABS as you can - almost right down to a standstill. This cleans a lot of crap off the discs and the pads. (BMW car handbooks advise this sort of procedure as a matter of weekly routine maintenance!)

After doing this (maybe several times) you should find that the brakes are much sharper, more responsive, and smoother in operation.

Got to be abs related if the noise goes away when you disconnect the front sensors.

Maybe a sensor but it still has the hallmarks of a reluctor ring issue :( it only needs a tiny crack to alter the spacing of one of the segments.

OMG!! FFS!!!.. Now wonder everybodys focked orf to the other side!!:doh:
 
i had that problem on me disco it was the abs firing randomly rather than endlessly triying to replace castleted rings and new sensors etc i pull the plug off the abs module and took the bulb out of the abs warning light so the light wouldnt come on and cause a mot fail
it was a pain in the dick for off roading anyway
