Hi there. Firstly, this is a '79 Series 3 with a petrol engine.

The throttle is not responding at all, having failed at a busy junction during the rush hour [joy!]. I managed to limp along using the choke as a throttle in order to get somewhere safe last night. I'll be wandering out to take a look at her in daylight this arvo, and would appreciate any advice on the problem. I suspect the cable has broken, or the linkage? Is this a common problem?

Throttle obviously responds when I pull the cable at the carbs... but no response via the pedal. I was unable to figure out how to access the pedal-end of the system in the dark last night. :(

How can I inspect the pedal-end of the mechanism?

Where would be a good place to get a new cable if that's the problem? How much are they and how much of a chore to replace are they, given fairly minimal mechanical knowledge (I change my oil and brake pads in cars and that's about it!) and a fairly minimal tool kit? How long a job is it?

Many thanks in advance.

there is various links and rods that link the pedal to the carb/(diesel pump on mine) check that they are all connected to each other , ive had a clip come off a connection losing accellerator

Follow the rods back from the carb - they go to the bulkhead, across to the driver's side and down to the throttle pedal. Lots of pivots and ball joints that can come undone held together with spring clips. There's a good drawing in the manual.

there is a bar in the inside of the driver's footwell, follow this to the outside, this should be linked by a rod to another bar on the engine bay side of the bulkhead, its most likely that one of the rods came off

if not follow it to the carb, another rod links it to the carb

no cables, so pretty simple really, just sniff around :D

If it ever breaks again - get a bit of string / shoe lace - tie it to the carb and bring it into the cab to give you a hand throttle - will get you home though takes a bit of getting used to to drive like that!
