Hi, I have a 2004 Freelander Serengeti on which the brake lights have stopped working. I have checked the fuse (same fuse does the reversing lights) and that's fine. I have replaced the brake light switch on the pedal and that has made no difference.
Is there something simple I am missing, or should I book it into a motor electrical shop?
There appear to be no loose connections anywhere I can see, but I'm not sure where or how I can check the circuit.
I must admit I'm a bit hesitant to drive it with no brake lights!
Thanks (I hope)
Mike

Very quick answer before I leave for work.

Dont know how many wires attach to the switch but joint what you think is live and negative, if the lights works faulty switch. If no lights broken wire?

Must go bye:bolt:

switch should have 2 wires - feed and output to lamps

circuit is completed by earthing at the back from the lamp holder to the chassis

Suspect you have either:

Corroded lamp holders (but unlucky if both stopped working), earth fault at back (favourite) or broken/chaffed wire

Thanks, but it's all three that have stopped working, the two lower and the high level one. If they're earthed from the lamp holders to the chassis I can't see all three going at the same time. I think I'll have to try the connector inside the rear bodywork - if I can find it.

A voltage probe might be helpful to see if current is getting along the feed wire, and in identifying where it stops

I'd start by checking either side of the switch to make sure there is 12v there

Is there an area on the forum where I could commit Hari-Kiri?
I checked last night, prepared to spend hours tracing a fault.
Thankfully I rechecked the obvious first - all three bulbs were blown..........
less than a fiver and nice bright brake lights all round.

That'll teach me to check bulbs in poor light!

I reckon they've gone at different times and no-one told me. Oh boy, am I checking everything on a regular basis now!
They say we learn by our mistakes - I wonder how long I'll keep checking?
