easiest = none, keep the current one

best compromise = Salisbury axle

'best' = Disco - but lots of work involved

Check out elsewhere on this section, I and others have written a whole load of blurb on the disco conversion, I'm doing it at the moment.
It is a fair amount of work but not impossible.
I now have a salisbury heavy duty axle spare which would do the trick without any mods, dont spose its much use to you in the north west though is it.

Remember you need a shorter propshaft IF you are replacing a rover type axle its quite possible you already have a salisbury if it was ex military or a working vehicle

from the rear of the vehicle can you see a ring of bolts from behind?

A rover diff the diff unbolts from the axle casing and the diff is pulled out forwards so the ring of bolts are the same side as the propshaft flange and not visible when looking behind the vehicle.

Failing a salisbury you could just get a 4.7:1 Series ratio with a 4 pin centre (like salisbury) from Ashcrofts but they are pricey and a difflock is probably as cheap if not cheaper and as strong.

In my opinion disco 300tdi is a good choice if you've got the knowledge to do it, I did mine on my drive! You can get stronger halfshafts and cv joints for the disco axle if it's strength your after.if it's the gear ratio that you want to alter just get 3.5:1 diffs (rangerover classic) they slot straight in to the series axle, that will give you higher gearing

I just noticed further up you are interested in my salisbury.
Only thing is I've ground off the mounts for the shockers.
So I spose its worth what the diff and brakes would bring, I suspect though now its been fecked with you wont wannit, typical and I thought I'd not be able to shift it.
