back door and bike rack

If the door does fall off, keep it to yourself OK? ;) :D

Out of interest, what bike rack are you using? The wife bought one that hangs on the spare wheel (£5 off eBay) only to find out that half the bike now hangs over the footpath trying to kill pedestrians :D

Are the hinges on the back door strong enough to open it with a bike rack and 2 bikes fitted.

I have a 'SimBars' bike rack that fits on the wheel carrier and the main bracket passes through the wheel centre.

The bikes stick out approx the same width as the door mirrors, on both sides, if I load them pointing one way - but hang out more one side than the other if I load them the other way.

I've used it to carry 3 bikes as far as BiH and back (5000 mile round trip) several times with no probs. at all.

I used pieces of pipe insulation foam tubes to give extra protection to the bike frames.

Singvogel.

i have a Simbars modified from Discovery it carries four bikes, 2 adult 2 smaller, no problems.
this carries them within the confines of the FLs width.

Same as mine, spare wheel hanging jobby, 5 quid from ebay.
The bikes stick out on the driver's side a little but no more than the mirror.
Only bought it a few days ago, tried the bikes on but didn't want to open the door with the bikes on until I checked with a grown up.

Does any one else open their door with bikes attached.

Sure - on a five day journey I'm opening the door with the bikes on frequently.

Been doing it for several years - door has never even been adjusted - I always oil the hinges and the door pillar catch.

Also make sure the little rubber triangle bit is free from gunge and that the little roller can turn easily.

Was there much work required to modify it? A quick search on eBay shows a couple of simbar carriers, the one for the Freelander is currently running a few quid more then the Discovery one, and with more time to go...

If it's a simple mod I might take a punt, the Missus is peed off about the one she bought and this might cheer her up :D

mines one that straps around the spare, the bars that the bike sits on are angled back to the middle so the bikes sit central, if you go down the bolt on route check what u buy first, the first one i bought fastened this way but the bikes touched the floor, dont forget theres always towbar mounted ones sure ive seen some on ebay cheap enough...

ive also had 3 on it no problems even tho it states for 2 only...

no, not really ( it depends on how tooled up you are )

the Disco mounting bracket only has 3 holes and at a bigger pcd so new holes need drilling.
The bracket is larger than the inner diameter of the Freelander wheel so it needs "trimming" with a grinder.

tbh i wouldn't put 4 adult bikes on it, and have never opened the door whilst loaded.

where you based? some cheap ones on fleabay.

4x4 cycle carrier | eBay

We are in South Wales.

The tow bar types are out for two reasons; one we have two big dogs who travel in the back of the FL and need to get out now and then to pee, two we use the FL to tow a caravan and tat sort of needs the tow bar :)

I'm liking the Simbar ones at moment, especially as I've got a decent drill, good set of bits and a grinder :) They look to be nicely offset to put the bikes equally across the back of the car, so no unintended hitch hikers :)

im sure most of the towbar ones are detachable via a rclip/pin system and also prop fold down out of the way, and i dont think most actally use the tow ball but bolt on behind the tow ball instead?

im sure some one will correct me if i is wrong.....:D:D

if you can weld ud make 1 for peanuts id imagine, or if you know a plumber/pipe fitter with a pipe bender job done..

I haven't done any welding in about 20 years, was rather good at it once, but laying my hands on the kit now would cost me the same as I'd pay for a second hand simbar off eBay, and as the FL tends not to rust I'd not be using the welding kit much down the line :)
