Just been quoted £90 for the auto gearbox oil change on my auto freelander that is complete job oil and labour. This sounds good to me?What do you think.Regards alkaja;)

Is that using the gen LR parts oil ?
Is it a specialist , for landrover or auto gearbox ?
If its no to any of the above , I would reconsider.
The jatco box is pretty critical on getting the right oil level at the right temperature. Its also not a box you can just chuck any old ATF in either . HTSH

I know the guy who owns the garage and he has done quite a few of these. He is using the recommended oils for the box and knows all about the implications involved.Yes this is for drain and top up of gearbox and transfer box..

At the end of the day if it goes tits up i'd rather it when tits up for him than for me.This way he foots the bill....

As I get older - and mechanics younger - I've grown even more sceptical about their attention to detail - and critical oil levels are top of the list.

I keep on hearing things like "That's near enough" and "It won't really matter" or "It won't make any difference to how it runs/accelerates/brakes/ or whatever!

Every job I feel I'm capable of doing - I do myself - I'm not as fit as I used to be, but changing any of the fluids in a Freelander does not need physical strength - or rocket-science - just knowledge - and there's plenty advice available on here for free.

I had a main LR dealer change my auto-box fluid at 60K and they screwed it up - a young inexperienced apprentice was allocated the job - not his fault really.

OK - they sorted it out - but my confidence in that dealer went down the pan.

Cost is not the most important factor here, but the correct Texaco N402 from the dealer cost me £56 for 5 litre - and the labour was down to me - did the job on the front drive on a Saturday morning.

I know for sure it's been done right.

Singvogel.
