Hi All,
After owning classic RR's for a number of years I have finally bought myself a well looked after, fsh, P38A 2.5DT (1995). I've had it 3 weeks and on 2 occasions it has flashed up alternator fault. Does anyone know if this is likely to be just a simple bush replacement that I can get done myself, or anything more that I should be looking at?

Hi

It could be one of Five things

1 Loose belt
2 Brushes (Easy to change)
3 Alternator totally stuffed (winding/armature stuffed)
4 Wiring to light faulty (probably incorrect Earth)
5 assorted connectors on the alterator corroded/broken

Hi Bigstoo,

That's interesting because it hasn't done it today ..... I'm towing my c'van 2moro so hopefully it is just a bit of quirkyness.

Thanks

well another 1 is has the car been chipped at all as this can interfere with auto gearbox/and alternator, but dear old charlotte has covered most of the bases, some p38s also suffered with the fusebox under bonnet burning out due to doddgy main live lead going in and wires rubbing through underneath the fusebox, i know something else to check all the best tiga.

Hi

Loads of Cars suffer from problems if you chip them, most chip companies deny this for some odd reason (Called money) even though they know it, Auto's are the worst suffers from oddeties.

Hi All, Been away for the weekend and just got back. RR didn't miss a beat, towed my 1400 kg c'van fine. Interesting about chipping ..... this one hasn't been chipped, (last owner dead against it!), and also the auto .... mines not that either!
One thing my wife remarked on about the fault message ... it happened at the same place .... ie the same pub that I frequent. I am wondering if there is a phone mast or something that interferes with something or other, I will look out next time I go.
The only slightly "niggly" thing with my RR is that it takes longer to start when hot ....... but I've seen the threads on this.

Cheers

p.s. since sighning up for this forum I've started getting spam .... must of missed a tick when I did it.

Hi

I know that some alarms are frequently interupted by Speed Camera/CCTV cameras don't know about Alternators, can't see how because an alternator just restors charge (in simple terms), It could be you're ECU which is causing the fault and not the Alternator (electrical systems can make faults appear somewhere else)

I would not think that "interference" would affect the alternator itself, but as for the message system ..... I don't know how/if this could be affected.
