I bought the Landy (05 Auto HSE Freelander) a few months ago now and after scanning this forum, a few essential mods appear to need doing...

Im looking to get the EGR valve replaced, replace the original MAF sensor with a BMW one, and consider a RoverRon box for fuel economy (32mpg currently sticking to 65mph on A roads). If anyone is local to me and familiar with any of these mods please let me know. I am hopeless at car mechanics and advice or observation would be hugely appreciated.

Few questions to get started,

1) Car has virtually no power for first 5-10 minutes when cold temps outside, is this normal?

2) Is there a way to get the auto box to change gear earlier when cold, as revs quite highly for first 10 mins.

2) The Sub in the car sounds awful, more of a 'tapping' sound rather than the bassy frequencies it should be pushing out, is this a common problem?

Generally loving the Landy and looking forward to snow this year ;-)

Many thanks in advance for replies to my questions. Looking forward to chatting to you all.

To answer you questions in reverse order:

The Harmon Kardon 'thing' in the rear tool-well does not like getting damp or being pushed to high volume. - check for it being dry - otherwise replace.

The auto-box will delay changes until the fluid is warmed up. When was it last changed. I do not recommend that you force it by using sport mode.

Lastly - it sounds like your fbh is not working. It should ensure that the engine warms up as soon as possible.

Some owners think it uses too much fuel (it doesn't) and that it is noisy (it is - for the first 5 minutes in the morning when it's needed most.

Check the fuse is OK and not missing as that is how folks disable it.

If there has been a fault with it it can be reset by removing the fuse and waiting a couple of minutes before replacing.

However a Freelander is not a machine you can start up on a cold morning and immediately drive off at speed. Be patient - let it warm up a little.

Thank you Singvogel. Pardon my ignorance, but what is the 'fbh'??

FBH = Fuel Based Heater (or some such thing). It burns Diesel to create heat instead of having to wait until the engine coolant has warmed up enough to let the heater work.

Singvogel - a question of my own though... Do all of the Td4's have an FBH?

No - they do not all have one.

Quick check is look under the near-side front bumper. If you see a steel flexi-pipe about 1" diameter sticking down - there's your fbh.

To go back to the Op's original post I think there could be some confusion where he says 'replace the MAF sensor with a BMW one'.

I'm thinking he means replace the pcv with a BMW vortex/cyclone one.

To replace the MAF you need either another Bosch one (as fitted by BMW originally) or get the much cheaper Pierburg one (which is a M-Benz OE part I think) from RoverRon along with the Synergy mentioned.
