Cheers for suggestions everyone, I think 110 with proper seats in the back is the best way forward.

What is the right defender term for that type btw? station wagon?
All Defender terms come from Series, the real Land Rovers.

Windows and seats in the back, Station Wagon. Solid metal back, Hard Top. Canvas Roof, errr, Canvas Roof! :)

And many Series were originally sold with Truck Cabs, a little cab covering the 3 seats in the front, and an open back.
I don't recall seeing Defenders with those, although they may exist.

The turning circle on a 110 is honking. Make sure your station wagon is a station wagon and not a hatchet job. Read the VIN and learn where they are. I bought my defender 110 csw whilsts 4 pints deep off EBay about 7 years ago and got lucky with matching number truck. Only now is it in deep maintenance, but as others say 200.000 miles in we are talking outriggers, turbo rebuild, timing belt, water pump, steering pump, bulkhead repairs, new doors x4, C pillars and, and, and :D

Discovery vs Defender is actually something I've been arguing myself all this time tbh, as you said defender is 'cool' but then again I will be ever worrying about it's security plus it's costly so I was wondering why not buy a cheep disco and mod it up. But I hear they too suffer from rust issues badly?
Some very good points made i think regardless of what model you get it will have a rust problem at some point. I got my disco 2 as a workhorse and it was cheap so i dont feel bad when it gets bounced off things (already has!)
