Hi there chaps,

I have bought an E reg 90 land rover for the first time and on the way back from picking it up, it broke down. It appears that one of the push rods broke and so on, as we think that the timing chain jumped . I have replaced all of the push rods, valves, valves springs, hotspots, exhaust valve guides including all seals and finally had the head planed flat, although it was prob ok. I have put it back together following the Haynes manual but the valve and crank time is well out, as the valves hit the pistons when I turn it over by hand. I have re-timed it, I think? It starts now but smokes a lot and has not got much power. I have run out of ideas and would like any advice. Please can anyone help ?

Cheers

Still a Landie beginer myself, but I have had a few diesels/deisels Oh bollocks DERVS. I think I be looking at pump timing, and injectors myself.

Not that I'd ever contradict Slob and his mechanic they might tie me down and, Oh god I'm going to have to go to the bathroom!!!!!!!!!!!.

oh grunt dear i quite agree that it is more than lickly timing but as haynes'ss figures have been know to be bollocks i was just saying it might be an idea to check the head is screwed down tight enough. you do need to have your head scewed on correctly;.gawd nose how i have survived this long

did i say pump timing?? must have been too much of bob's xmas mix§ i should have said valve timing. so i'll say it now valve timing .thats matching up the two lumpy things so they turn together correctly.

I'm 90% sure that the valve and crank timing is ok, as when the number one piston rises for the firing stroke the exhaust valve closes and when it is past TDC the inlet valve opens. I think that the pump timing might well be out, as you said earlier. I will have a look later and let you know. Tar

Never got round to looking at the landy today as it got a bit cold and snowy as I have not got a work shop at home, but I will work on it tomorrow weather pending, also fed up of removing the low pulley and water pump with all the bolts to remove. I am sure that the problem now is the pump timing. Thanks you both for the advice, any help is welcome to a novice like me !
