Disco 1 300tdi coolant filling

Hi,

So when filling back with coolant, the level in the tank has to be about halfway. The radiator is full, but I can't fill the thermostat housing to the top without the level rising in the tank. What is the correct way to fill the system? I already checked the manual but it makes no mention of the plug on top the thermostat housing except for draining purposes.

fill till just under the level you want

close cap

fill the thermostat housing

get it hot

check level tomorrow when cold

that Y piece is supposedly what makes it a self bleeder

Yup, haven't had any problems since, apart from the fact that I must've tightened the thermostat plug too hard and it broke a bit at the edge... had to botch it with silicone until I get another one with a bigger order from paddocks.

Engine hasn't overheated and level has not once dropped in the expansion tank.

You want the brass cap, as it is a bsp thread you can get one from your local plumbers/b+q etc.

(Didn't know B&Q had got as far as Finland! )
Thankfully BSP is standard throughout most of the world!

X 2 on the brass plug

replace the one on the top of radiator as well while you at it

I believe it was already the brass plug, it wasn't plastic. Or it might be aluminium. It's the lip that cracked.

Definitely. It's a shady plastic sort of plug and I already had a scare once when I thought I cross threaded it. It takes forever to get parts here, and to go in town and look for similar bolts and plugs it's a 7 mile walk as there are no buses!

It's not uncommon but the options of bolts and nuts are very limited and you have to spend a whole day going from shop to shop to find what you need. At the end of the day you might have to order or to improvise.
