recently bought 98 diesel and heard from various sources about 2wd economy but since doing this as soon as i got the motor its only giving about 25mpg round town. somebody at local l/r place where the mrs delivers suggested a gearbox swap for rover 216 to do away with ird altogether....the other thing is that the motor runs as normal with the airflow meter disconnected (came about by accident) can this be whats making the motor sluggish or are they like this anyway....as a new boy to l/r i would be grateful for any help or infomation...thanks

wanted something chunky to tow cars with so not necessarily 4x4 ...as a senior member i thought you might be capable of reading the whole thread and offering some useful relevant information to a new member but it seems your a lot like so many other people on these sites that are just out to score points and do little else!!!!

I drive a Freelander so I am never going to score any points round here.
The freelander is designed to be a 4wd and should be kept so. They are usually put in 2wd after serious mechanical failure coz the repairs are more costly than the value of the vehicle.
If you want economy and can afford one buy the new freelander2 with stop/start. If you don't want a 4wd then why buy a Landrover?
Unless you can find one of those old RAF series that came in 2wd.

That's quite good advice.

The last of the REAL Landrovers was the TD5 Discovery, and maybe the Defenders.

The Disco 3 is a Slitty-Clone. It has no axles. It EATS tyres. Fronts struggle to manage 10,000 miles, rears only a little more. One of these will cost a fortune to keep on tyres.

How heavy a trailer is to be towed? You will need to take care that the GROSS TRAIN WEIGHT and the Gross TRAILER weight stay inside the allowed figures.

There is a plate under the bonnet giving all the details.

You might be surprised how much LESS the slitties and volvos are rated for compared to a Disco.
