Hi all. While I am happy with my venerable 2.5 N/A at the moment, I have been offered a free disco 200tdi, from a known source. (not quite free, as they want the 2.5 for a US export). So I'm thinking about a conversion later in the year.
Anyway, there are loads of threads and excellent articles about the conversion as you know. But I see a difficult bit is getting the exhaust to match up - usually a special conversion down pipe is required. I was thinking of avoiding this by buying a defender 200tdi exhaust manifold (there are a few on fleabay). Does anyone know if this will bolt straight on and enable me to use the standard defender 200tdi exhaust downpipe? Will I need the Defender inlet manifold as well?

You need both manifolds, but they cost as much as a complete disco 200 engine, the def turbos are very very expensive, disco ones on the other hand are 20 quid jobs.

Perfect answer lynall - thanks. I'll stick with the disco setup and a exhaust conversion pipe. Looks like Pirtek are the people to extend the Disco high pressure power steering pipe, and I'll buy new defender oil cooler pipes. All I have to do now is find the rad/intercooler at a decent price.

turbo pic.jpg Im having the same issues at the moment
defender 200tdi engine with a disco turbo etc
I went for the steve parker adapter off the turbo.
You will need to move the clutch pipe bracket on the bulkhead as its in the way of the down pipe, im having a flexi pipe made to fit into the adapter
and will then fit onto the front down pipe that has been cut back.
Will get a picture on this weekend if needed
