2001 freelander TD4

Hi all am a newbie here so please bear with me if i post in the wrong section.

today i bought a 2001 freelander TD4 it is totally mint in every area and cannot fault it in any way.

what i want to know is this,people keep tellling me to remove the rear prop shaft as this will make the MPG better and will also be a bit quicker.

I don't intend to go off road nor am i a speed merchant so would i gain anything from doing this or should i leave well alone??

Oh also it has 156000 warrented miles how long do these engines go on for??

Hi, and welcome.

Do not remove the prop-shafts.

Any slight gain you may possibly get will be cancelled out by the loss of cornering ability especially in the wet.
It will not go any quicker.

Your Insurance Company may also not be happy that you have 'neutered' a very able machine.

4X4 is not just for crossing muddy fields.

Serviced properly the engine should be good for 300K plus.

Search and read up on here about the points to watch out for:
VCU
EGR
pcv/oil separator

That's enough to get you started.

Check that the tyres are all the same size and preferably the same make, with the best treads on the rear.

welcome to the landy zone , i would keep it 4wd its a great motor to drive, i have had mine ,(2001 td4) for 7 years wouldnt want to change its driving ability,
i hope you are handy with the spanners quite a few niggly things seem to go wrong

Hi folks thanks for the advice,will leave well alone i think.
Like i said i know nothing about freelanders or land rover so i am stepping into the unknown here,however i am a bit handy with the spanners which will help my cause.

see pics below i paid £1730 for it 1 owner from new,completly bog standard when it came out of the factory, had over £3000 spent on it in the last 12 months inc both fuel pumps propshafts clutch the list goes on....

Nice! I'd aggree with the others, don't remove the prop. I've had to as my VCU is on its way out. I can definitely feel it slipping at times and I no likey. If you can, keep it 4x4 as it's meant to be.

as for your engin well how long is a piece of string just keep it well serviced and replace all filters oil, air, and turbo vent and good oil and all should be well keep an eye on your water hoses at that millage mine has done 173,000 and just suffered from hose problems

I also removed my VCU as a precautionary measure, as it had covered 80 odd thousand and was showing the signs of failure. But hopefully before the winter I'll have it all back together, with a NEW VCU, no recon for me!!

Ooh, and as for slippage Will, new Goodyears on all corners stops the slippage, after hearing reports on them I was apprehensive, but since running with them especially with all this rain we've had, I've been impressed.

Hey crockett, I'm going to get a recon VCU but from Bell Engineering, who are tried and trusted. You can part exchange your old one too which makes it a bit cheaper.

I'm a bit conflicted about the tyres, what I really want to do it get the 2" lift kit and then fit some BFG All Terrains as they last for ever and are good everywhere. It would be a solid investment now that I've sorted out most of the "core" mechanical problems, but it might be some time until cash is available. My other half is insisting we go on holiday, and as we haven't had a break in ove two years I'm kinda seeing where she's coming from.

We shall have to see.

I may take a trip to Bell, as a good friend of mine lives in South Brum, so kill two birds with one stone, book it in for a Friday, get it sorted, and stay for the weekend

Did you see the 2" lift that DM did on his FL? Quite impressive I thought, makes it look like a better version of the Disco...... ( wait for the backlash ........)

Not a bad idea at all. But the problem with that plan is that she's no stranger to machines herself, and I fear that our cunning deception would be sussed .

They will fit it while you wait. We went and had some lovely fish n' chips and it was done by the time we were done . It's worth going to have your entire transmission inspected, they will be able to tell you exactly what state it's in and what to expect. Great guys truly.

Must say, the lift does look good on the FL, no matter what anyone says
