Hi all,

You know that sinking feeling when your wife comes in and says there's something wrong with the car? Well, here's an interesting case study that, in hindsight, I should have solved straight away.

Symptoms, as reported by wife:

Hesitation under load, especially accelerating from 50-60 uphill. Reduced fuel economy. During hesitation, the blower fan comes on along with the MIL.

She took me for a drive and, yes, the fan appears to come on as described and definite hesitation. No codes on my cheapie ELM27 scanner.

Any ideas?

Is this a quiz :) - I mean - you put (SOLVED) in the title ?
If not, I think you are confusing the radiator cooling fan (coolant circuit) for the internal blower.
What model is it ?
Have you checked the coolant level ?

As your freeby doesn't have a manual choke, then the old problem of the little woman pulling the nice little convenient knob out to hang the handbag on is probably not the cause.....................................................

Yes, a sort of quiz. I just wondered whether I'd been a complete plonker or just a common-or-garden one.

Some extra info - there's no FBH, and neither the cooling nor the blower fans had any fault. But the noise we could hear sounded exactly like the blower being turned up and down with the revs under load.

Coolant level fine, Td4 S.

...And my little woman tends to put her handbag and some shoes on the passenger seat just as I'm getting in, so no choke knob problems there.

Ok ;)
(This reminds me of a story - a very true one - which we can get to later :D )

Can't wait to hear it!

Did the money light (or A light!) come on when YOU test drove it ?

Yes. But I know what you mean - when she said it was lacking power I immediately checked the handbrake wasn't on.

If it didn't, she probably had some battery operated 'appliance' on the floor under the go pedal.:p

Better there than where I can accidentally sit on it ;)

Hmmm.. puzzled by this one... Is it the old rag in the air filter intake from the last under-bonnet check ? (don't ask me how I know)

It was a split turbo hose. This reduced power and fuel economy, and led to the MIL.

The noise was identical to the blower fan, and appeared to come from the dash, not the engine bay - a bit of a ventriloquist's act. I've had a split hose before, but that one made a clear hissing noise and definitely came from the engine bay.

There are so many threads on here about Td4 performance problems - what about a checklist sticky? Something like...

Check intercooler hoses for splits
Check operation of VNT on turbo
Air filter
EGR sticky?
When was fuel filter last changed?
LP pump noisy?
Inspect fuel rail pressure sensor harness
Inspect fuel pressure regulator O-ring
Injector leakback test
Plug in diagnostics and check LP and HP pump outputs, FPR duty cycle, injector balance

Yes definitely - I will start the ball rolling -
There are so many threads on here about Td4 performance problems - what about a checklist sticky? Something like...

Check intercooler hoses for splits if split - buy L series
Check operation of VNT on turbo if not working - buy L series
Air filter if clogged - buy L series
EGR sticky? if Sticky EGR - buy L series
When was fuel filter last changed? don't bother - it will still be bad - buy L series
LP pump noisy? if not it willl be soon buy L series
Inspect fuel rail pressure sensor harness If working it will fail soon - buy L series
Inspect fuel pressure regulator O-ring ( there are two types on the TD4 - failed and about to) - buy L series
Injector leakback test Will turn into a wallet leak test - buy L series
Plug in diagnostics and check LP and HP pump outputs, FPR duty cycle, injector balance Best not to look at all - buy L series

:p
