I touched on this in another thread but thought it best to make it a separate.

1985 90 Truck Cab.
New doors from SP4x4
New plastic trim and felt runners in place.
New glass but try as I might, it’s just too tight to get in. I have followed the manual where it shows it going in at an angle but it’s too tight to pull/push straight in the felt channel/runners.

Beginning to think I’ve got the wrong glass. It’s the 5mm thick glass that came out of the old doors. Does the glass have the same overall width regardless of the various part no. options?

I’m out of ideas and pulling my hair out. I don’t think I’m doing anything wrong.
Any help/suggestions greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the above. It's not the thickness of glass that is the issue. It's just too tight on the width, even when putting the glass in at an angle and trying to straighten it.
I did remove one of the felt runners but once the glass was in, I couldn't get it back in past the (angled) plastic trim.
I might try removing the runner on the latch side of the door and see if that work's

Christ, bloody Land Rovers...making me question my own ability and sanity!

I presume you're not putting the shims in under the felt runners then. :D :p

Have you got some off cuts of the felt runners?
You could put a piece on either side of the glass, push them on hard cos they are a tight fit on the glass when they are new. You can then measure across the glass including the runners and see if that measurement matches with the relevant internal dimensions of the door.

I did but one of them is now laying on the floor in a tangled heap...my patience was tested and the test was failed.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!
As you know, I didn't put mine in and my windows are snug, ie not slack. Have you bonded them in? If so, you'll still be able to pull them out???

Hold on, I've just had a thought
What did you bond the channel in with? Did you put it on the back of the channel or just down the sides? If you put it down the back you might have a mm or so of adhesive behind each channel, that'll add up

Day 1,305 in the Land Rover house...and Karls wants to know who’s idea it was to rebuild a 90, find them and shoot them.

Update on fitting the glass. I pulled the latch side felt runner out, stripped off the metal shim then slid the glass in and fitted said felt runner in from the top down. I don’t like it, I’m not proud of it but it’s in, the glass is in and I’ll be buggered if it’s coming back out.

And now, just to top off a day I shouldn’t have got out of bed for, the glass lift channel and rubber seal has decided to join in with the fun and not want to fit on the glass no matter what (I throw at it). I’ve left it for tonight as I could see me breaking the bloody glass and that would be the final straw. After checking, I can see there are two different rubber seals, one for 4mm & one for 5mm glass. It could be I’ve got the seal for 4mm glass so I’ve ordered the 5mm jobby and hopefully I can gather up all my toys and put them back in the pram in readiness for when that seal arrives.

For those of you out there that rebuild more than one of these....you need help.

When I replaced a rusted out lift channel on our Disco, I couldn't get it to fit ... so used No-more-Nails or similar ... works fine and holds very well

Put the rubber seal on after all that was dry and a nice cuppa ...

I know how you feel! I fitted new glass a few months back, twice on same door. Both Britpart, both correct part number, both wrong! First pane had top corners so rounded that they didn’t even fit into the square corners of the door frame, second pane was 4mm even though I ordered 5mm ( the stickers all suggested it was 5mm ). The channels were bought for 5mm glass so I bunged the 4mm pane in and squeezed the sides together a bit! I can see how having 4mm lifter channel and 5mm glass would be a pane! Err.. pain.

Wise words Obi-wan (the force is strong with this one).
Do you need two guesses as to what I did?...probably not.
Well, I guess if I make a multitude of cock-up’s on the first door then the second will be plain sailing. Aah, I can see it now, calm seas ahead, sunny blue skies, just a whisper of wind, only the sound of rippled waves lapping against my ocean yacht, sipping my fifth ice-cold cocktail through a straw whilst watching my 18 year old girlfriend and her.....sorry, I digress.

Back to reality!

To continue the sunny, tropical note......................few adhesives are as strong as they claim. :)

I had the same trouble with my lift channels - bent them open a bit. Didn't need the metal side shims either. I think the new channels are thicker than the originals.

Yeah it looks like I’ll have to do the same. Did you put any lube on the rubber seal?
