Thinking of buying a Vogue

If you are looking at early L322s then the 4.4 petrol is a nice car. Whilst it doesn't have the same chocolate gearbox as the Td6 diesel it is not without its own issues.
Don't rush into this or it could all go really sour really quickly. Do your research, drive a good few, decide what you need and how much you really want one!
Then you'll know you are buying one of the best cars on the road.
 
Hi Everyone.

Please forgive my ignorance here. I currently drive a freelander (and have done for nearly a decade) and there are only a few different ones out there to choose from. I wrongly assumed the Range Rover Vogue was a particular vehicle, not a range of vehicles.

Why do I want a "vogue"? I drove one a couple of times at a previous job and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a pool car so all I did was pick up the keys and drive it, I have no idea what it actually was. Much like the one at the LR dealer, all it said was Range Rover and Vogue on the back. It also had private plates like all the other pool cars, so I dont know what year that was either.

Maintenance is not an issue as I can either do it myself or get the local LR specialist to do it for me. They do everything on my freebie so I trust them. Servicing expense is also not a problem, but I dont have a lot to spend on initial outlay purchase price, hence looking for one in the £5-6k range. I have no intention of buying one from a dealer as - despite me telling them my absolute maximum budget and that I was looking for petrol only - they sent me away with a diesel price list where the cheapest was over 40k... and they kept trying to flog me a new defender even after I told them in no uncertain terms that I was not interested. I run my own business and am fairly comfortable, but I cant drop 40k on a car...

If I have to buy a slightly knackered one and spend several months doing it up then so be it, I will just keep my freebie a bit longer while the work is done.

I completely understand when you say you are passionate about your Rangies, I honestly never thought I'd be considering upgrading my freebie to anything else - hell, I've plowed enough money into her to buy a decent Range Rover anyway - but I think its now time to get a more refined grown up car.
I feel a bit like a dog with a bone here but mainly because I feel you're stuck on " I want a Vogue", when you come across that you don't actually know what makes a "Vogue" a " Vogue" and maybe what you want is a Range Rover and would be happy with any of the trims if you got a decent vehicle for your money. Maybe I'm wrong and in the last couple of days, you've checked out all the different Range Rovers and the trims available and have set your heart on a particular trim. Whichever I wish you success in what you are looking for.

Sounds like you all ready know the headache of owning a green oval so are not going in blind with rose tinted glasses , as said do some more homework and have a look it a few to work out the good from the bad, and when you test them check everything fitted works and is not bodged or had corners cut with maintenance.
 
My L322 will be on the market shortly.....it is a 2003 4.4 V8 running on LPG (diesel running cost :D)

The engine runs sweet as a nut, but the Torque Converter will need replacing as it has a drone and rumble between 30-45 mph on light throttle (this is a common fault on all early petrol L322's - research and Goooooogle are you friend - it is well documented on Landyzone too). Also the N/S/F inner track rod (nick named the Drumstick) will need to be replaced, they simply screw off and replace, tracking may need to be done afterwards depending on how good you are counting the number of turns to unscrew the old one and screw in the other!

She is a Vogue model with the Sat Nav (upgraded Mk4 version), Heated front and rear seats, tri-zone climate control, 14 way electric seats, etc etc etc....

Fitted with a genuine bulbar and light guards, 19" alloys...photos attached....

I am only selling as myself and my partner are starting to become flat broke and with a young family to support, the time and expense of owning a Range Rover is getting to much for us.....If we both earned more money and she worked full time (she is part time to look after our daughter) we would keep the L322, but we just are not in that place of being young and carefree anymore and now have a kid to pay for!! So after 17 years of Range Rover ownership, we have decided to draw a line under this episode of our life and begin a new one. In the future there will be another Range Rover - I am just made that way - but at the moment it is not practical for us anymore.

The sale price will be realistic considering the work required to get her back to A1, and also I am not leaving Landyzone anytime soon so the new owner will have a direct connection with me on here - in other words, I am not looking to off load a shed and then turn my back and ignore anyone....she'll be sold open and honestly with all faults there on display!

The reason "I want a vogue" is because, of the three I've had personal experience of, they've all looked identical on the outside, interior trim has been the same (albeit a different colour in one of them) and they've all only had the words Range Rover and Vogue on the back. However wrong that might be, in my head, thats a Range Rover Vogue and not a Range Rover ABC123 with trim pack #4.

Thanks to this thread, I now know what I'm actually looking for is an early model L322. Would I like a newer and better model? Sure, who wouldnt, but the one I want is the best I can afford right now and unless the engine falls out on the motorway, or it kills me some other way, once I buy it, I'll probably have it for another 10 years or so.

I consider myself thoroughly chastised, and schooled in equal measure!:p

You are, as always, too kind GR. The L322 needs a bit of work to bring her back to A1, but it is all doable and all in keeping with her age and also with their little 'niggles'. It is just not the time for us right now to keep her, and after 5 years of her ownership, it is time to draw a line.

She will be sorely and painfully missed.

If you want my advice I would buy Saints L322, I am 3 years and about £5k into my project , not including the £6k I bought it for. You can buy one like mine that had 'no faults, it is perfect' and then you can find the faults yourself and I bet they are more than you will ever find on Saints.
Whatever happens they are all going to need more attention.
I think you also need to learn the correct term to you use in a Range Rover forum for a freelander ;)
 
Wow, that is very high praise indeed. I have spoken to 'er indoors and she said we can come up and look at the weekend. I dont mind coming all the way to Surrey. Its nice of you to offer to meet me halfway, but if I buy the car, you're left stranded!

To be honest, the high praise was good, but the fact it already has LPG kind of seals the deal for me as that would have been my first major job anyway. My freebie runs LPG and with the cost of fuel only going up, its either LPG or electric and I cant afford a tesla!

Give me an hour or so to make sure I have no clients coming in the morning and I'll PM you to arrange a day and time convenient to you. In the meantime, can you pm me your asking price?
 
He's got the right idea: go for the top of the range model. Unfortunately trim models went to pot after BMW got involved and everything became optional and had to be topped up. But Vogue used to be the dog's danglies.

Best work out how much to fix Saint's issue, especially if you're not doing ti yourself. But I echo what the others say: if there is more to do on Saint's than he has declared then no-one else will find it until after the event. You could easily spend £000s on new gearboxes and such on one off a forecourt.

If I had the money to fix Saint's and also keep my P38 (and the Jag) then I'd have had it off him as soon as he mentioned he might let it go.

Cheers for the praise Grrrr.....remember I stand on the shoulder of giants, all I have learnt about these beasts have been through research, trials nad error and a bit of hard graft!

I have sent the chap a PM with the things that are required to do and the parts prices from reputable stockists (Island 4x4, British Parts etc) so he can gauge the repair costs required to bring her up to snuff - including a replacement Torque Converter.

As you know, I am not going to suddenly run away and leave the poor guy with a 2.5 tonne lump of Solihul once it has been sold should he decide to buy it - I am not made that way - I will fully support any issues he has with it after purchase and help out where I can.....it is all in the spirit of Landyzone and Land Rover ownership.

Not at all Ant. I only wish I had an ounce of your skill and knowledge of these beasts, it would have saved me a truckload of heartache. Not only have you kept yours in fantastic condition you have helped keep nearly every other L322 on here in better condition than they would have been. A few months ago I'd have been the one snapping your hand off to buy it. :D
 
The L322 came in 3 basic guises pre 2005, SE, HSE and VOGUE, the VOGUE is the one everyone remembers, sort of like the period of the Cortina, L, GL, GLX, GHIA,,,even LOTUS. (MK1)
Not sure what differed apart from ICE and superior quality front seats and maybe wood trim???
But VOGUE sounds better than SE.
SUPERCHARGED or AUTOBIOGRAPHY trumps everything, if they are genuine.

Seriously consider Saints LPG Vogue, not because I think he has maintained it regardless and is a God, but because I had one and it was the greatest thing I've ever rode in, and cost the same on fuel as maybe a Vectra 1.8.
You will have people turning heads, not because it's a RR, but because their soul has awakened to a alien (to them) sound beat, that of 8 in a V.
They turn instinctively, unsure why, only to have an aural delight delivered unto their souls.
Ambrosia to the ears, all available from start up and ones right prod!!
