I have a 1999 Freelander 1.8XEI and it seems to be overheating , but when I bleed the air out of the valve in Hose from the Heater Matrix the gauge drops to normal. It also when driving can be at the top of the gauge one minute but normal the next, I have tried bleeding from the valve on outlet hose from Heater but still no joy. It is if there is air in system
Can anyone tell me how to bleed coolant system and if that is the problem that I have

Hi hermano. . .have been down this road[not on a freelander] however ,this is a off the record Ming method, get yourself a length of plastic pipe that will fit in ya reservoir think 11/4 inch will fit ,get a large funnel or drinking bottle with bottom cut off using duck tape ,make yourself a header tank, place in reservoir tank with tape and fill it up run engine as normal till correct temp and keep that res topped up and watch all the bubbles come out,of course when you've finished, squeeze ya thick hose fast[make sure engine is cooler] to bring level of reservoir to bout correct place, this is the sure fire way to getting rid of dreaded air locks, best of luck. . .Ming

Hi Ming,

As I'm always in to learn something new I have a question ploease, what is a header tank ?? (sorry but my English not that good, especially not in purely technical terms, sorry)

Willo. . . Header tank [just my slang] take it as the header tank in a house is always higher than ya immersion tank the higher it go's the better the flow, but in the car radiator system , a good way to make sure you get rid of trapped air in system. . .Ming

Hi both,

I think I get the picture. But do you close off the reservoir around that plastic tube or do you leave it with a gap ? And I think you have to be able to fix that header tank somewhere near the top of the open hood then ?? Ciao.

Willo . . . Yes mate you need to make sure that you use the duct tape to seal to the reservoir[were you fill up rad] a piece of pipe ,then the bottle top neck [tape] and the bottom of bottle sawn off at the top[or a funnel will do]. . .Ming

Hi Ming,

Thus to me it looks as if you lifted the coolant reservoir by about 1 meter with no lid on it, leaving the top open to be able to add/pour more water in it when needed? (without touching the car's radiator) ?

Ciao.
