How many labour hours for a clutch?

300tdi defender to a lt77

How many hours would a “reputable landrover specialist” charge you?

I phoned up today to ask for a price, got told it would take 8 hours at £60 a hour.. with me providing HD lof clutch kit.

Thoughts?

8 hours with a ramp aye right, props off, hand brake cable, bellhousing bolts, slave cylinder, unscrew gear nobs
crossmember/mounts 1 hour tops....box out clutch off n bush in flywheel replace n clutch & uprated fork 45 mins,
1 hour to put back in. 4 hours tops including coffee n fag breaks.

I can see a few things going wrong and there goes your hours.
Old car mix match engine/gearbox, couple of seized bolts especially floor plate bolts/screws, rounded off prop bolts.

With the 77 box the engine might swing forward enough to get the clutch in without rmeoving box or engine.

Or it could just be a fcuk off price!

Agree...... its ok to look at the workshop manual with the "simply remove the two bolts, release then refit in reverse order", but on a 30 year old car...

Ask if its an estimate rather than a fixed price. If it goes well, I'd like to imagine they'd charge the actual hours taken rather than their 'book price'

I was pleasantly surprised as recently ball parked 330 quid for a screen wash motor as its a pig to get to, wheel off, wing off... pleasantly surprised to see £56 quid as it was just those hose came off.... Not sure many garages would come in under their estimate by much.... even if it was a quicker fix.

It took me longer than that to do mine although i've been repainting bits and renewing and futtering about ...
I also discovered that my flywheel had a 17thou channel in it which needed to be smoothed out.




And then the gearbox needed a clean up prior to refuitting ...




And I need a new handbrake cable and the shoes were a bit worn/oily ...

Saying that @Tirran and I changed his clutch (200tdi - LT77) by removing and replacing the engine in around 6 hours, but that didn't include refitting the floors and carpets etc etc.

If time is a constraint then spend the £600 and get someone else to do it.
If you want to look at everything and have the time, it's not that difficult/complex a job.

And ... they are heavy items (transfer and gear boxes) so it's really a 2 man job ...

I didn't think that was unreasonable, guess I was wrong.

I done mine in 3 hours with my engine crane in the passenger door, removed the tunnel & cubby box panel then
lowered it down had to re-adjust the staps to fully lower it.

You took your gearbox out, fitted a clutch and put it all back together and up and running in 3 hrs?

Sister's Disco 200tdi clutch cost her £850 about 15 years ago... was told it's an "engine out" job...

yeah was going to say.. even with a lift and transmission jack.. i'd be quoting like 3 hours also.. i got the vibe from the guy that he didn't want to do it as a aftermarket part as he wont make money on it..

got another quote today for 3-4 hours labour.. they're happy to do it.

Quick question/near subject

Do any of you disconnect the battery before replacing clutch or gearbox?

Had clutch done by garage in past and they didn't. Now its in garage for gearbox and they want to disconnect it

It can be, I took the engine out on my son's Ninety. Mind you I don't really know what I'm doing.

My Grandson (RAF techy) spent a few months on the Falklands last year. They lent him to the army and he helped 'em change 14 clutches on some of their fleet of Defenderers. As they had no ramp/lift/hoist he took the engine out every time.
Guess he must be quite quick at it now! So I doubt you did anything you didn't orta!

I personally wouldn't be taking the engine out to do a landy clutch, IF all your doing is the clutch, seems alot more of a palaver than hoist through door and lowering it out. Obvs if you have removable crossmember. Dad's done it on a RRC like that also.

I have done a full size truck clutth in 1.5 hrs, and they are way way easier than a defender.

I would bet there is a quick way of doing them at the lr specialists.

I am sure they do have a quick way and I am sure they also know the problems that can go with it.
My clutch was done before I bought it, going to see if I can find the bill.
EDIT: Forgot it had a gearbox at the same time, so the total bill would be a bit irrelevant in this thread.

Yes pal 3 hours is plenty time to do it, im a grease monkey to trade so I can swing on spanners all day long.
