    Salisbury Woes

Okay so slightly better news. The crown and pinion look okay, that's a huge relief. Its the pinion bearing that has collapsed - just battling getting it out now to check if the pinion shaft is okay. I think I am going to try and upgrade to an Ashcroft LSD while its all out. Fingers crossed!

    Salisbury Woes

Ashcroft have the differential which is fine. Winchester has a crown wheel but they wont sell it to me unless it part of a whole axle (which will take weeks).

    Salisbury Woes

This is more of a rant than anything, feeling quite low. So long story short, we are off to the Pyrenees next Friday, the Friday just gone (bank holiday weekend) we were heading out to Wales and the rear axle pretty much seized up on the motorway. Brief inspection and there is a big crack in...

    Full width intercooler

Hi All, I fitted an airtec intercooler yesterday on my 300tdi defender. It requires the stays supporting the bonnet slam panel to be required. Plot twist, after hours of faffing around adjusting the bonnet, I realised that when the bonnet is pushed closed it bends the slam panel and also the...

Lost all drive (and my own drive)

I thought I would give you all a small update. Having had it inspected by the mechanic & friend it appears that the transfer box is toast. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the intermediate (?) shaft has sheared. So there is power / drive through the gearbox and through the transfer box...

Lost all drive (and my own drive)

Be warned this is going to turn into a bit of a rant! So having a nice weekend out green laning yesterday, driving along in 3rd low up a steep'ish but flat gravel track. Catching up with the car in front I put my foot on the clutch and put it into 2nd low. Release the clutch and next thing we...

    Sluggish disco.........not any more!

How would it make a difference? I've been eyeing them up for a while as mine is slowly falling off - tempted by a back box delete.

    Sluggish disco.........not any more!

Apologies for adding this to a thread from 2019, but this is what I have used for advice so it seemed sensible to put it here. So the problem is steep hills off boost (engine hot or cold, does not make a difference). For example if I stop on a steep hill, without going into low range its...

    Turbo Replacement

100% they are 1/2 and not 13mm! I can't get the snapped studs out of the manifold they are welded / rusted in place. I have bought a new (well new to me!) manifold off marketplace for £50 and that has the nuts and U shaped bracket with it - its going to be cheaper to do that than get a garage...

    Turbo Replacement

It means I am replacing the standard turbo core, with a hybrid turbo core? The four that hold the exhaust manifold onto the turbo core (the ones holding the U shape brackets on. I know they are 1/2 but nothing other than that and it dosent seem to be a common part.

    Turbo Replacement

I am replacing the standard core with a hybrid one and enjoying the delights of getting the four bolts undone. I have resorted to extreme violence, so I will need to replace the four bolts. Does anybody know what size they are? I know they should be 1/2 inch, but thats all.

    Rear Anti Roll Bar Links

So the bushes on the rear anti roll bar were an advisory on the MOT, I have decided to do a 'proper job' and replace the links too as they looked a little worse for wear. I really wish I didn't bother. For the life of me I cant get the ball joint links off. The ball joint that goes through...

    Possible swivel problem?

I made it! 1,748 mile round trip over 18 days and no real issues to speak of. I did tighten the wheel bearings at one of the camp sites, but I was half expecting to have to do that once they bedded in a bit - it was my intention to do it before we left after a long run but I never got time...

    Possible swivel problem?

So a little update. I started with what I knew which was the wheel bearings - the passenger side one had certainly seen better days and although still working it was very rough on rotation. With that replaced (along with the drivers side as I like doing things in pairs) the play in the wheel...

    Brake Light Live Wire

Long story short my passenger side rear brake light stopped working right before a trip. Lots of swearing and threatening later I have figured out its something to do with the live wire (its not the bulb holder / connector). Currently I have done the bodge of the week and used scotchloks to...
